Ordinary People with Manners

Dear Friends,

Hope you all had a good week and will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the weekend.

We had lovely weather for a few days but yesterday and today were windy, cold and wet. It almost feels like it may snow. This type of weather is very hard on the arthritis.......In my next life I am going to be a weather women as I am just as accurate predicting the weather as the man we have here on TV.

Yesterday I was guest speaker at a Capital Health Luncheon, I spoke on "living with terminal illness and chronic pain." There were about 80 people there, some patients with family members or friends and others were care givers. Sometimes when I speak at these events I don't feel any one is paying a lot of attention but yesterday was a good day, people were interested and listened. Many stayed around after lunch and speeches asking questions and we were happy to spend time with them answering their questions as best we could and what we didn't know we were able to refer them or give them telephone numbers where they could call for help. Later in the afternoon I had to drive a friend downtown Edmonton as his truck had been recalled so he had to pick it up. He was asking about my volunteer work and what kind of people I dealt with. I looked at him and said "just ordinary people with manners" and I cannot think of a better way to describe them. They live and always will live every day of their lives knowing they will not get any better yet they were so thankful that we cared about them and wanted to help them, they were pleased to receive the information and the references we gave and they were a pleasure to help out. What really made an impression on me was how they spoke softly and use words like please, appreciate and thank you, they didn't act like they were entitled to anything but they did act very grateful. Sometimes I have found manners today have become a lost art. Working with these kind of people make volunteer work so worthwhile and encourages me and my co-workers to want to learn more, to help more and make these people's lives just a bit easier. I love to hear them laugh and see them smile.

Today I had another B12 shot and will continue having one every week for the next 3 weeks. I am feeling better but still quite tired so hopefully these shots will give me a bit more energy. All in all it has been a productive week. I have been invited to join friends tomorrow, they are going to the lake to open up their cottage for the season and I would really love to go especially if we have nice weather, if it is cold and wet I think I will sit home by the fire and read my new novel.....what are your plans?

God Bless.............and many, many Hugs.....:-)

The weather is awful isn't it.. if only it could make up its mind what it wants to do.
This weekend, well today anyway, its supposed to be glorious sundhine here but as yet there's no sign although it is only just after 9am.
i think i'm going to tackle the garden, i'm sure there will be lions and tigers living in the grass.
Have a wonderful weekend Bernie.. What novel are you reading?

Sounds like your weather is just as cold as ours Bernie :)...people like you are a lifeline for some people and it makes it so worthwhile to know you are appreciated and have helped someone at the end of the day. Where would we all be without people like you xx
p.s. you are definately right about the lack of manners these days - no manners is my pet hate! It was always drummed into us as kids and I do the same to mine!

I'm sorry to hear that the weather turned bad. It is going to be a lovely weekend here. It would have been better for you. I already have the back door open so the dog can walk in and out. Keep warm and dry, that's my advice. No going to the cottage in cold and wet weather. Take care. Hugs, XXX

Ooo Bernie, I know exactly what you mean. Arthritis is a brilliant barometer, I just wish I could lose mine. Honestly, I'd rather not continually be reminded that rain is due. I'm glad your talk was a success. All in all it sounds as if you really enjoyed the day. Hugs for you.

I am interested in the reason for the B-12 shots. A couple months ago I told the doctor I was going to start taking B-12 and that I had read online about the reasons people take it and she told me to just take multi vitamins. I should have just gotten the B-12 then. Anyway I got some B-12 tablets yesterday. The tops of my feet get tingly and I can tell there is the start of some nerve damage. That is why I am now taking the B-12.
I admire your volunteer work. You live a fulfilling and interesting life.

I hope you feel better and have a great weekend.

Grace and manners: fine attributes. Have a good weekend. The weather will be fine here, but I'm not sure what we're going to do. The boss is still asleep; I'll get my orders later. :)

Hi Bernie,
Working with the terminally ill is very rewarding. When I worked with cancer patients or just knowing people who are terminally ill, I am always amazed by their courage and love of life. We can all learn from that.
Hope the weather warms up for you so you can visit with your friends. Sounds like a fun day.
Have a great day!

Bernie, sorry your arthritis is acting up. I was so enjoying the nice weather too, put my furnace back on. I am glad your talk went good and obviously the response was great. Every once in a while someone surprises me by their manners, makes up for the ones that don't. Today my husband is going to go clean up the grounds with the senior mens ball leaque. I will be in my nice warm house and may venture outside. gotta get groceries, other than that it is going to be a very quiet weekend. sometimes we need that. take care Bernie, loved your post.

Oh, yeah, Bernie!
Just do the opposite of what the weather guys says, and you'll have a good chance of being right!

People with good manners...what a nice way to be described. That says a lot Bernie, maybe that's the denominator that should be the base of everyone's lives in this world. Manners first...then comes Love and Peace!

I will be spreading compost on my small garden this weekend, Bernie, rain is predicted though. We did manage to erect a fence around it earlier in the week. Just trying to keep the squirrels from the future green tomatoes.

Glad you are getting your strength back. Enjoy the weekend, wherever you are.

I certainly agree that it has become a lost art - manners - especially amongst the young people, but with the general populace as well. I don't know if it's because everyone is so hurried and worried or what. I try to be polite all the way down to the checker at the store, if for no other reason than that it is such an easy thing to do to give someone else a few seconds of civility and respect, even if they don't always deserve it!

Hi Bernie,
It sounds like your speech went very well and it was a good day! I hope your weekend weather turns out good for you. It is supposed to rain here for the next four or five days but it is spring after all! Jake is hanging things today and tomorrow and I am cooking, exciting huh!

HI BERNIE

I am so happy to know that YOU spoke at a luncheon because I know everyone thee benefited from your compassion, wisdom, and love. And that line you wrote? "Just ordinary people with manners"!! I love it and it is so obvious when I am around someone who is just that and I truly appreciate that humble grateful style. I/we ally with such a way of approaching life. Great post Bernie.

Love to you my friend

I mentioned to you that my Mom gets the B12 shots and over time they ave helped. So hang in, k? :-)

Hi Bernie,
Sitting by the fire with a good novel sounds good to me, however, when it is nice out I enjoy evenings at the lake sitting by the camp fire with friends and family. I hope to do more of that this year.

It is nice to hear you are out in the public speaking and that it is appreciated. Good for you, and for a great cause too. I so agree with you that manners are becoming something of the past.

In my work, I find the general public so rude, and I have had times where I am working on a shelf and someone will come and stand right in front of me, and not even say excuse me. Or they will bring their cart or their stroller down the isle I am working in and expect me to move everything for them, and then not even say thankyou.

I need your phone number again B. Email it to me at teresadh@hotmail.com. Lets get together soon!

What a great inspiration to keep teaching my kids manners! Sometimes it seems we tell them over and over and over and over...it is easy to slack off. But, you restored my ambition to keep teaching not only manners, but the attitude of not expecting anything! Glad you are feeling a little better. My D was very low, and I was AMAZED at how good I felt after taking supplements.

I'm glad your talk was appreciated, and what better reward! Must feel so good!
And I liked your description of 'ordinary people with manners', sounds so sweet.

And both your plans for the weekend sound good to me! So if the weather is good or not-so-good, it's a win/win for you!

Today we are having a little Birthday party here for Mia because we missed out on her actual birthday with Jayden being sick. Just the family, food, and fun! My kind of day!
And the weather really is cooperating, so I was able to clean up the little side deck and set up for the smokers and the overflow!
Tomorrow no special plans, so we'll see.

Enjoy!
Love to you,
Eileen

Lynn said...

Bernie, first of all I'd like to say *Thank you so much* for visiting me on my blog, and for leaving me such kind comments! You are soo sweet!

I would have loved to been at the Capital Health Luncheon yesterday, to hear you speak on your topics. I do think that people nowadays are very interested in learning as much as they can about living with terminal illnesses and chronic pain. I know I am. My daughter is a traveling RN and suffers on a daily basis from chronic back pain which she's had now for 5 years ever since her car accident when a lady hit her car on the left drivers side. She has her good days then she has her really bad days, where she can hardly get around. It makes it so bad. I wish there was something that would totally alleviate all her pain, but I think she's going to have this awful pain in her lower back the rest of her life, as nothing yet has really helped her.

I am so glad to read that you are feeling better..

Have fun with your friends if you do happen to go to their cottage on the Lake today, or if you stay home, staying warm by your fireplace reading your novel~

I love reading your blog Bernie!

Have a wonderful day, and weekend too Bernie!

Blessings,
~Lynn

anne h - that is so true. It must be horrible to be a weather man knowing you are going to be wrong at least 50% of the time, how depressing is that?.....:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Hi Gail, it is a shame that so many have forgotten what it means to hear a please and thank you. I'm not sure when manners began going by the wayside but I do hope people will begin teaching their children now so as they are not forgotten all together.....:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Terri, I am sure you have found some rude people while you are setting up displays....not sure why people are so angry right now, I hope and pray I never turn that way although when I am in pain it is hard to always be nice but I also know it is not anyone's fault.
Glad you had a wonderful birthday Terri, that drink looked really good....LOL......:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

MommaMindy, so nice to have you visit. Somehow I feel you will teach your children their manners and many other good things as well. I am waiting for these B12 shots to kick in, I am still tired. Oh well it could be worse.

Bernie said...

Eileen, yes Thursday talk went really well and I always feel good when that happens. We put a lot of work into it and when it is appreciated well that just makes us feel better.
It is cold here today, calling for rain and wet flurries so I am staying by the fire.
Your weather sounds beautiful, I can't even imagine being by a pool right now. Have a wonderful weekend my friend, big hugs to Jayden and Mia.......:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Lynn, living with chronic pain can really wear one down. It is very discouraging at times and many people suffer deep depression because of it.....your daughter sounds like she is handling everything very well, I'm sure being an RN she realizes what is ahead of her. I will say a prayer for her tonight at Mass.
Take care my friend......:-) Hugs

I would have loved to have heard you speak at the Capital Health luncheon. It's wonderful that with all your health issues you continue to spread love, joy and peace to others on a volunteer basis. Thanks for the beautiful positive influence you are on others. God bless you! Hugs!

Oh, I'm watching the celebration of the Southside LRT opening - right from my apartment window! Too chilly for me to want to join them. I can hear the music from there!! Think I'll take my weekly nap after lunch!

I was glad to see that you were staying in today! It is blustering rain and thunder today. It has been ongoing since last evening and is not to let up until early morning tomorrow. We will go to Mass and to our favorite Mexican spot for dinner, but that is all we will do.

Thank God for people like you, Bernie, to be there for terminally ill people. I do well with the sick, but I am so tender-hearted that when it comes to loss of a loved one, I break down when I should be expressing my sorrow for their loss. I wish I could be stronger ...

I think in the coming weeks, I need to find a place, a niche, where I can give of myself. I believe that will help me a lot.

I always love reading your posts. Thank you for your encouragement and prayers.

Love,
Abbey

Bernie,
I am SO glad you are feeling better and up to socializing a bit more. I know how you love to be around people.
How wonderful that you were a guest speaker..I would've loved to hear your presentation. I bet it was full of wisdom and compassion.
We made it by car the 1700 miles down from Michigan to Florida...my daughter's official due date is Sunday, so no baby yet and we made it here on time to hopefully be with her when the baby comes....I was so worried she would be early and we would miss the birth...but now we are here and waiting....
The weather in Florida is hot...was 87 today, but balmy breezes on the Gulf coast helps.
I am trying to read blogs when I can and I prepublished some on my own blog so that they would appear when I am gone. It depends on when the baby comes as to how long we will stay down here.
take care and I hope you continue to feel better and better.
luv ya,

"Ordinary People with Manners" -- it would make a good book, Bernie.

I saw such misbehavior yesterday at a new restaurant that I really felt too despairing to enjoy the meal, and it takes a LOT to dull my appetite! It is a lost art, and worse, the new generations (because honestly it's quite a few generations involved) actually SCOFF at being polite and grateful.

What an amazing soul you are! Volunteering of one's time is always commendable, but to feel that YOU are benefiting from it is exceptional. "Working with these kind of people make volunteer work so worthwhile and encourages me and my co-workers to want to learn more, to help more and make these people's lives just a bit easier."

I totally agree with you about manners becoming something of a lost art. It's sad that people have forgotten, or never even learned such simple niceties as please, thank you, excuse me, etc. I had the unfortunate experience a couple of years ago, on the famous Beale Street in Memphis, of having a young man rudely bump into me on a street corner. Even though it was clearly his mistake, the words "excuse me" automatically escaped my lips, while he turned, laughed, and said, "Watch out BITCH!"

And what's happened to "you're welcome?" Now it's "No problem."

Sad.

You probably know I've been suffering from low B-12 levels, also, and after having weekly injections for a month, I do feel better. I'm hoping things will drastically improve for you.

Hope your weekend was fabulous!

Hello dearest Bernie, Those B12 injections will work. One of the patients I gave these to took 3 months but came from being in bed full time, to mobilizing.
Remember my article on Healthy Liver...well another health hint is fresh air, and breathing properly. I am not a smoker but I am a lazy breather. We need to breath deep down into the diaphram...(like into the tummy.) Oxygen is the cell feeder and without adequate supply, they die..One assessment of patients is to ask, do you smoke? And the above, is the reason why.
More oxygen, better health!!Anything you'd like to know just email.
Much love... Crystal Mary

We are having really cool and wet weather tonight Garnet....I have an appointment tomorrow so I am hoping it won't be raining too hard when I'm driving as my hands are pretty stiff and hard to hold on the steering wheel.....always something with me garnet isn't there. Hope all is going well with you and the girls......:-) Hugs

People with manners -- it's always good to encounter them. Such a simple way to make others happy.

Good Morning Bernie sweetie...
So thrilled to get back over here and say good morning to you. I am still battling this darn cold. I am afraid it may be a little more than a cold. I am off on Friday so will be paying a visit to the Doc to have it checked out.

Sounds like you had a great turn out for the speeches you shared. I am so thrilled for you, as sometimes volunteer work can be quite challenging, and you find yourself wondering why you even do it. Then you have a great turn out like this one.

Speaking of manners, I know exactly what you mean. Everyday that I get on the Phoenix freeway or even our streets. People are so rude, and manners fly right out the window. Maybe it just happens like that in a big city.

It was 94 here yesterday. Really hot. We are expecting wind, high winds today, not sure about the temps. Hope yours turns out to be a beautiful warm Spring day.

Love ya sweetie...Sherry

Hello!

I was just stopping in to let you know about a giveaway at Creative Carmelina! It would be nice to have you enter for a chance to win my framed artwork!

I think it's important to teach our children manners....because politeness begins in the home, and sadly many aren't getting that kind of an education anymore!

great post!

see you soon!

Hi Bernie,

I'm sorry your weather isn't so great there. I hope it improves soon as well as your arthritis.

Manners...I hope I'm teaching my children good ones...but sometimes I wonder about the next generation. Hmmm!

Hugs,
Jackie

Jackie, I'm sure we all wonder about the next generation but I do feel that parents do the best they can....it is just that the younger people think so much differently than we did.......:-) Hugs
