Sadness, Frustration and Luxury

Dear Friends,

As I sit today by my warm fire watching the Olympics I feel so contented and happy, then a wash of guilt falls over me as I remember the earthquake in Chile last night and those who are trying to prepare for the tsunami. The weather has been so weird this winter, and the consequences has been devastating to so many. My prayers go out to all those affected by this latest tragedy.

I was frustrated after reading this morning's paper. The press has been brutal to our athletes and Vancouver as they host the Olympics Games. They were brutal on the Canadian Women's Hockey Team for the way they celebrated their Gold Medal Win. These reporters just don't get it. It has been a tradition for several years for all hockey teams who win a Gold Medal.......not just this team. Each winning team goes back out on the ice to toast the Games and their team mates....why? Simple.... many of these players will retire and this is the last time they will be together on ice after training/competing four years together. They wait until after they receive their medals and the arena has emptied before they toast each other, the games and their victory. Now I am not saying they are right or wrong, I am just saying this is what they do. Why some reporter who obviously knew about this tradition, had to sneak back in and photograph this team moment is beyond me, I wonder if he feels his 15 minutes of fame was worth it.

These have been an excellent Olympics. With all the diversity and the mild weather the Canadian Olympic Committee has done a fabulous job keeping it all together and getting it done. The death of the Georgian Luger was devastating but they soldiered on so that all those who worked so hard these past four years would have the opportunity to compete. Not only our Canadian athletes but all of the athletes representing their Countries have given us their best performances, I loved all of their beautiful personalities and strong discipline. Now Canadians are not a boastful people and I admire this trait but when I see a spontaneous game of street hockey begin after a hockey win or people breaking into song, automatically singing the Canadian National Anthem.....makes me proud. We don't have the great numbers to choose our athlete's from, yet those who are chosen work so hard, play harder and dream bigger. So as the last couple of days wind down let us all celebrate each other, not only the ways we are alike but even our differences. All of these young athletes deserve our respect and I for one am so happy they shared their excellent skills with us.....they have brought so many of us much entertainment, excitement and joy these past two weeks and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for sharing their shinning personalities and wonderful professionalism with the world. All of you were great, and Canadians are as proud of you as your own Countries. To me all of you deserve a Gold Medal for your efforts.

I want to share with you my new purchases, they are heavenly to a me as I suffer with peripheral neuropathy......so anyone with this same problem I highly recommend these, they are great!

Sheep Lined Slippers.......almost as comfortable as my UGGS!

Sheep Lined Foot Warmer, okay so it is a bit of a luxury and not a necessity oh but it is wonderful......should of bought one of these years ago.

Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday, God Bless..........and many, many hugs:-)

Bernie,
I feel for the victims of the earthquake as well. The Olympics has been great and I am sad that it will be over tomorrow :( I don't know what I will watch on TV! I love your new slippers! Those look so comfy and warm!

I was saddened to hear about the quake in Chile, too. The earth is acting strange, even the weather has been bizarre.

The Canadians are doing great in the Olympics. I think of you and how proud you must be :)

Those slippers look comfortable, Bernie :) My dad has neuropathy, too, from diabetes. You are in my prayers, I hope it doesn't get worse. Your feet deserve the best!

Now Bernie, don't go spilling any Olympic secrets - I'll be watching the recorded programs long after the games are over! Most times, the Press seems to put such a negative spin on things, I don't care to listen or read what is reported. You sure look cozy in your Lazy Boy with your feet all toasty warm! Enjoy a peaceful Sunday, Bernie.

HI BERNIE-

I was so happy to see you here tonight. My husband works a very long day, from 10 to 10. So by now I am on my last leg too. phew. No complaints, I swear, no complaints.

have been following the earth quake disaster and the tsunami fears and it is so frightening.

I really enjoyed the olympics too. I didn't even hear of the toasting tradition. That is unfortunate that some reporter spun it for his personal gain.

Well, Gracey-Blue is crying to go out so I best get down stairs - I am just so glad she lets us know, ya know> Hallelujah!! :-) And I love your sheepskin furry feet warmers and coverlets. So cozy.

Love to you my friend
Gail

I agree with your post Bernie... Too bad the girls were portrayed in this way.

Take care!

Another earthquake, this time in Chile. Dreadful. I feel for the people there.

Those bootees look brilliant. Exuding warmth. I don't feel cold but neuropathy has taken some of the feeling away in toes and fingers, mainly fingers. Hoping it will go after chemo.

Hi Bernie, the press has come down heavy on our athletes... we only got one gold medal and of course everyone blames lack of resources for the standard being so low. A word of encouragement now and then would go a long way to rebuilding confidence. Love your feet warmers, in my ignorance I confess to not knowing what peripheral neuropathy is, but I intend to find out. My muscles are plaguing me at the moment, I put it all down to continuous damp and cold weather.

Now I want some!
My feet are *jealous!*

HI Bernie,
I have reallly enjoyed the Olympics. My favorite is the womens and men freestyle skating. Although, I never did get to watch the medal contenders because when they were up it was way past my bedtime.
Your slippers look very comfortable and warm. I have a pair of boots that look just like them. Do you believe that I was wearing them all day yesterday. It is still cold here in Florida.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Take care.

Oh My Gosh Bernie, my feet are always freezing, those sheep liners and the slippers looked heavenly. And I had to laugh at your position as that is my very favorite as well!
I didn't watch the Olympics but from what you described, I didn't see anything wrong with the way the womens hockey team toasted at the end.I mean for many of them this was a once in a lifetime event. How special to celebrate to remember the very special day. You know the media isn't always right and can be deceptive as well.

Wife and daughter have slippers like that and quite like them. Enjoy the final day of the O's.

I agree with everything you said, especially about the olympics. Every athlete was there because they worked so hard, and that's actually why I have a problem with awards in general. It's more about who was best at that particular moment on that particular day, not that they were the best of anybody. They should all get medals.

Where did you get those foot warmers or rather what brand are they? They would be great for under my computer desk where my feet just freeze! Are they pretty expensive?

Wanda..... said...

Good morning Bernie,
The earthquake in Chile was shocking, to have happened right after the one in Haiti. It's good the damage from the tsunami wasn't extreme.

The women's hockey team's actions were no different than other traditions of drinking champagne, pouring it or ice buckets over each other, as they do after football games and car races. Almost anything can be over analyzed and made to look wrong in some people's eyes.

Your sheep lined slippers and foot warmers look so comfortable Bernie. Luxurious things are sometimes necessary for our comfort, especially if experiencing neuropathy. Herhusband used a small "electic wool throw" at one time, until his improved. Hope you see an improvement soon, Bernie!

Bernie how true about the media. They always look for the worst in things. I am so proud of Canada and proud to be a neighbor. When the Olympics were in Atlanta we had all kinds of problems. A bomb was planted and that is still being talked about. Sad to say they will go on to their next victim. You sure look cozy and warm in those fleecey goodies. Also been watching the Chile disaster. Makes one wonder what is next. Blessings to you.

Love your cozy new slippers Bernie, where did you find them? They would feel wonderful after one of my long workdays, as my feet usually are really hurting by the end of the day.

I have been hybernating the last few days, and stopped listening to the news, so I did not hear about either of the events you mentioned here in your blog.

I am out of touch this weekend, but plan on watching Canada and USA play for the gold today. I am so excited!!!

What is 'neuropathy'? Hope you are doing ok.

Very sad with the havoc Mother Nature is having around the world with earthquakes, storms, and tsunamis. My prayers go out to all for comfort, sustenance, aid, relief, and protection. Makes you put things in perspective.

I feel bad for the bad press the Canadian winners got too, kind of leaves a sour taste in your mouth. But just revel in their great success, Bernie! Canada is top winner of gold, right?! Kudos!
And today it's the big hockey game with Canada and the US! Both have done very well, and each is guaranteed a medal, so it's all good here!

Love your slippers and I am never without slippers at home as my feet are always freezing! Yours look wonderful and I love the idea of the little foot sack! You look comfy and cozy! Enjoy!

Love to you,

Cathy, I agree as we have had Olympics where althletes have been kidnapped and murdered, we have had pipe bombs in parks and when I hear the press say the worse Olympics ever it annoys me as I know how hard the COC has worked to include everyone and keep them safe......I do think I got carried away a bit though.
Love my slippers and foot warmer, so warm and comfy......:-0 Hugs

Hi Di, these are most comfortable slippers ever and so soft and warm. I think having arthritis you would find these amazing and foot warmer is such a treat.
The media really make me angry Di as they only look for something negative to write about when there is so many good stories.....am watching hockey game now....:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

A/C I am sure they love them as I do........just amazingly comfortable.

Media really got to me A/C, I think the Canadians have done so well and instead of standing up and being proud the media have to bring them down, I don't know of any other country who does this to their athletes......I am afraid I did get carried away a bit....am watching the game now, exciting eh!
.........:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Linda, I so love each athlete and each one has their own story, I think they are amazing.

I ordered my footwear online from a company in the States, I can get the address for you if you want. These are the most comfortable footwear I own other than my UGGS. I really need to be careful what I wear on my feet as I don't have much feeling in them and they are always freezing......:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Wanda, I was devastated when I heard about the earthquake in Chile, I am confused as to why all these national disasters are happening now.......so sad but was happy that the tsunami did not materialize.

Oh I was angry at the media, most countries are so proud of their athletes and when we bring ours down it upsets me. Sometime I feel that the press feels they must be negative to have something to say. I am watching hockey as I am catching up on my comments. I know I will be going through Olympic withdrawal tomorrow.

Love my new slipper and foot warmer, I should of purchased them earlier as they are so soft, warm and cosy.

Take care my friend, big hugs to Alivia.........:-) Hugs

Bernie said...

Gaurav, thank you for your kind words......am so enjoying the Olympics.

The bootees and foot warmer are a real treat for sure....am loving every second I wear them.

Weather has been weird for sure, am praying for the people of Chile.

Peggy, sometimes the media pushes my buttons especially when they pick on young people who have worked so hard for so many years with no chance to party or celebrate as they are always training, then when they have an opportunity the media really comes down in a miserable fashion.

I am so enjoying this afternoons hockey game, right on the edge of my seat......:-) Hugs

I so agree with you on your view of the Olympics..and congrats on the Hockey win tonight! That was a wonderful game and they all (both teams) played so hard.
Canada did a wonderful job on these Olympics, you should be very proud.

I love your footwear....if you keep your feet warm, your whole body stays warmer!!! It is not an indulgence, don't waste a moment more feeling guilty...you so deserve those items!!!!!

I couldn't believe it when I heard about Chile after the Haiti earthquakes....it makes me frightened for our planet and makes me wonder what is going on with it...
Love to you and I hope you have a wonderful upcoming week!

I feel terrible about Chile, what is going on with our planet, I am wondering if that killer whale could sense this earthquake which may have caused him to freak out, I have read that all animals can sense these things. I don't know really Joan, it just went through my mind.

I have to admit that I didn't watch the Olympics with one exception: the women's figure skating competition. I always enjoy watching that.
