I'm Hot

Hello my friends, hope you all had a wonderful week.

Our weather has been very hot.....yeah that is the only way I can mention my name in the same sentence when using the word hot....lol We have had beautiful sunny days and horrendous thunder/lightening storms during the evenings and throughout the nights. Their were times my whole house lit up and the noise deafening as the storm was right over my house. My plants and flowers have a touch of root rot. I drain the pots each morning and the water pours out, the soil is saturated, not sure how much longer I can keep them looking nice let alone alive. I have to say I have been enjoying these lovely days, even the nightly electrical storms and basically have had a great week which I enjoyed tremendously.

My friend, Pat invited me to join her and her granddaughter Maddie for High Tea at Fort Edmonton. Fort Edmonton is a town within a city and will take you back to the early 1900's. All the buildings and businesses come from that era. Fort Edmonton includes homes, drugstores, hardware stores, bakers, seamstress, doctors offices, churches, post office, jail, blacksmith and shoe makers etc. All shops are the original buildings that have been restored and moved there from downtown Edmonton. Each building have refurbished furniture, stoves, pictures and carpets. It is like time has stood still. A train runs throughout the town dropping people off at their requested stops, also horses are tied outside of saloons and barber shops. The sidewalks are made of wood and the streets are dusty. There are horses pulling carriages and all the workers are dressed in clothing of that era. It is fun seeing the young ladies baking bread in old ovens using the same recipes our ancestors used. There were ladies making cheese, soaps and candles. Blacksmith's putting new shoes on horses and even the original land office had an employee there explaining how people purchased and registered their parcels of land. He was considered to have a well paid job being employed by the government. He made $1200. each year.

We began our day having High Tea at the Selkird Hotel, another original building from 1901. Our tea was served on fine porcelain dishes again from the same time period. The table cloths, napkins and even our servers dressed in the fashions of that time. To start we were each given a choice of tea, which was served in huge individual teapots. We had freshly baked scones with our choice of strawberry butter, raspberry jam or clotted cream. These scones would melt in your mouth. Then came the tiny sandwiches, again we had many choices of cucumber, egg salad, salmon, chicken salad and finally desserts. There were brownies, cakes, cookies, tarts and pies. We were told all food was prepared in the huge old fashion kitchens, and was prepared daily so that everything was fresh. One needs reservations and to my amazement the dining area was full, not an empty table available. The people there were from all over the world and it was such a pleasure not only being with dear friends but meeting families from so many different places. I absolutely loved it.

After tea we began walking about the town and visited many of the homes and businesses of that time. We didn't have time to see everything. Apparently the hotel prepares picnic baskets if you ask so that you can spend the whole day visiting each and every home, church and business of that time. You then could sit in the shade of a wonderful old oak tree by the river which runs through the town and munch on all the goodies in your picnic basket for lunch. It would take at least a full day to see all the sites, read all the plaques and listen to each period dressed host/hostess explaining the history of where you were. The men wore bowlers or top hats depending where they worked, their shirts and collars were sparkling white and heavily starched. The women wore bonets, large aprons and long dresses or skirts. Even their hairdo's suited the time, for example the Gibson look for women and hair parted in the middle for men. It was not uncommon to see the men in the stables, blacksmiths or carpentars wearing denim and cowboy hats. In fact Fort Edmonton has been used to shoot several movies.

Needless to say being a history buff I was like a sponge soaking in all the stories and history of a time long ago. I am still convinced I was a chamber maid in England in a former life.....lol

I took many pictures but am unable to upload them to my post. I would of loved sharing with you what I was fortunate enough to experience but alas I am still fumbling around with blogger who has yet to co-operate fully with me. I will say I am understanding all the new additions a bit better and feel it won't be long before I will make my way around this new set up as I did the tried and true blogger I knew so well. I hope my next week's post will include pictures.

I also enjoyed a BBQ with my neighbours, saw the movie It's Complicated and had lunch and went shopping with an old friend one afternoon. All in all a good week.

Wishing you all a great week and may August be your best month ever. (Did I say August....oh my where has the time gone) Sending you all big hugs and much love............God Bless......:-)

  1. Trying to keep cool here by having the fan blow on me! I'm so glad it did cool down overnight after the rain! I haven't been to Fort Edmonton in years - after reading your great post though I really should go one of these days! Enjoy the long week-end!

  2. THIS is a FIRST for me (Being the first to comment on one of your posts)!

Thanks to you, I've moved "High Tea" up a few notches on my Bucket List. Sounds absolutely charming--the WHOLE day!

How was "It's Complicated"? I'm waiting to see Eat, Pray, Love (I think that's the title). It's really getting a big build up to its premier sometime in August...

Good to hear of your days, Bernie! With love & hugs, R

  3. We're hot here in Georgia, too, and it is almost unbearable. Have had a few thunder/lightening storms, but not enough rain to get out of the drought. I can't believe you were able to write so much detail about your adventure in Ft. Edmonton! The High Tea sounds lovely, and I think it's always fun to visit another era. Lovely lovely post, Bernie!

  4. Well, hello there...
so glad to have you back online.
That's quite a time you had there, very interesting. I too, love history and the old ways of living.
ps. have you tried saving your pics to your desktop and importing them from there. That's what I do. Just easier for me, unless I blog them straight from Picasa. I love picasa, so easy to post from there.
your blog is looking good. the new one is hard to deal with for me...

  5. HI BERNIE-

oh what a wonderful, fascinating adventure. I could just see you enjoying all the historic sites, sounds, smells and tastes. I never heard the phrase "high tea" until just now. I love that you shared that. :-) ANd you are so "hot" and not cuz of the weather.

I am still in the thick of this MS set back - I am managing as best I can - grateful for any relief and quite discouraged when it intensifies - has a mind of its own. I am hanging in one step at a time

Love and big hugs to you Bernie

  7. Gosh, you have been busy. No wonder you are hot.

Can you put umbrellas or garbage bags over your pots while the storms are filling them up too much?

  8. Fort Edmonton sounds like great fun and the meal sounded delicious! We have had a hot summer, too, though the last two days have been much cooler. It's supposed to heat back up though. I'm glad you are enjoying your summer, Bernie :)

Oh you really have to join in the Retro Glamour Party. No one knows you right? Well maybe a few people who follow your blog but hey the pictures were taken a long time ago and we looked fahbuuuulous dahlink.
Oh wait! Was yours a boudoir photo. Maybe we shouldn't see those ones.
Aww come on and join in.

  10. What a lovely post! It's been hot here as well, Bernie.

You may want to add some new soil to your plants to revitalize them. I had the same problem last year. It really helped. I also add small rocks to the bottom of my pots, which helps them drain better.

I would have loved to have been with you as you walked among those shops... I've never had high tea before. I hope you're able to add pictures. Upload them to Picasa and it's easier to put them into your blog.

    Love & Hugs,
    Joey

  11. I enjoy thunderstorms too, Bernie, especially ones that do no harm, I find them exciting. My flower baskets aren't doing well this year either.
Your visit to Fort Edmonton was like a real step back in time. We have a pioneer village near us, that reconstructs scenes from the past, but not on such a grand scale as there.

  13. Oh what a wonderful time you have been having. I so enjoyed hearing about it. It is hot here too and will be even hotter next week. Spent the day doing art with my granddaughter this week and taking pictures for the Friday Shoot Out in tribute to Barry. My flowers are in bad shape too. But they gave their all for a while. I know what you are saying about blogger. I am getting more used to it now. Having a new blog is like cleaning house and just getting everything reorganized. blessings

  17. Bernie, we also have been having real hot weather here in Oklahoma lately too.. It's supposed to be 100* tomorrow and 105* on Monday, then be in the 3 digits all week long.. That's not including the heat index temps.. I'm not looking forward to those high temperatures at all! Thank goodness we have air conditioning in our home!

I've not been to Fort Edmonton, but sure would love to visit after reading your post! I find I am interested in history more and more nowadays, compared to what I was in jr. and sr. high school.. I wish now that I would have had more interest in History back then, as there's so much for one to learn about.

    Blessings,
    ~Lynn

  63. Hi Bernie - I so enjoyed your description of Fort Edmonton Park. You described it to a *T" and speaking of Tea - it must have been a special treat. While going to UVIC, one year my summer job was serving high tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria. My daughter and I went to tea there last year. We were given a souvenir box of Empress tea that day and I just used the last of the tea tonight - now that's a coincidence I think...It's cooled down now - hope the storm has passed you by as well tonight!

  107. Hello Bernie, hope you're keeping cool in the heat. I was compelled to type Fort Edmonton into a search engine, and having looked at some pictures, I can appreciate what a fascinating place it is.

  108. It is hot in Canada in the summer.
We are having very temperate weather this last week. I am not too good in excessive heat though so it suits me fine.
Edmonton sounds a lovely city. I like the sound of a city within a city!
