As for me I am wearing a green sweater and serving corn beef and cabbage for dinner. You know my ancestors (father's people) originated from Northern Ireland, Sligo area and I like knowing this. I only wish the Irish were known for more elaborate food than corn beef and cabbage or potatoes. Well I know they like their whiskey and love to dance and sing wonderful story like songs. I happen to love their music as well.
In 2008 my sister Sheila and I visited Ireland and I loved it. We stayed in Dublin and I found the people to be friendly, funny and very kind. We traveled by train to Sligo County to visit where our ancestors left many years ago only to arrive in Canada. I did not get the information I wanted but I plan to go back and really put some effort into learning more of our ancestry. I found myself enjoying the beautiful green fields, their cemeteries...yes I enjoyed reading the names and dates on the headstones. In fact there was nothing about Ireland I didn't like, well except it did rain quite a bit.......one lady on the tour bus was asked if she brought her umbrella and she said "of course I have but instead of everyone carrying an umbrella perhaps a huge umbrella should be put over Ireland itself then we all could enjoy it" She was so cute and we all laughed at her honesty, actually I think she was onto something myself. It was wonderful just knowing my feet were touching the ground that my very own relatives had touched many years ago. There is something to be said about knowing our past, some how the older I get the more I appreciate all those who have come before me and the more I want to learn about them. Yes learning more about my ancestors is a project I want to start very soon.

Happy St Patrick's Day to you too Bernie. Although I always lived failry close to Ireland I never visited, I wish I had... it's a little bit of a further trek nowadays! However I do think the landscape, greenery etc is very similar to Scotland (where it also rains shed loads!). A huge umbrella needed... never a truer word said :0)

ReplyDeleteI went to Eire a few years ago, crossing the choppy irish sea on a ferry. There is amazing beauty over there, but yes.......... it does rain a lot. That why the hills are so green. I particularly loved Killarney.
As for wearing green...... I will have to risk being pinched though that has never ever happened to me!

I'm afraid I'm totally Dutch and don't even have one drop of Irish blodd in me, but I do appreciate their music and the country itself. My daughter has Irish blood, but she's more connected to the Dutch half of her. Her father visited Ireland and made a bike trip there. He said it was wonderful, but he doesn't like whiskey.

ED, I found Scottish weather cooler than Ireland....oh and the fences were made of grass hedges. Both countries are beautiful, so blessed to have visited them.

I was at the elementary school this morning about to administer some tests and the intercom came on. The principal (a lady)...started the morning out with a warm hello to the students...and then said, "I know that it's St. Patrick's Day students, but let me remind you that there will be NO pinching of anyone....not wearing green doesn't allow you to pinch. Have a nice day." I had to smile. The students would LOVE a chance to 'pinch'...but...alas...not at our school this morning.

ReplyDeleteI have done my genealogy and know my paternal grandmother's family came from Ireland but the info only says born in Ireland, does not give the exact location, and I got stumped about 4 generations back. They is never an end to the looking. Just knowing where to look is the key. Ancestory.Com has been my source. Not going out today so not worrying about wearing green. HH is so he has on green. ReplyDeletemy bil and his wife live in Sligo Pa., a sister city to Sligo in Ireland. They have met several people from Ireland when they have their Irish festival and some from Ireland come to it. They went there last year and fell in love with the country and people. I have always wanted to go there but maybe in my next life.....*s*

It is good knowing your roots. My husband doesnt know his at all apart from the fact we THINK his grandfather was a Canadian Airman stationed over here during the war x
